The GNEX Industry Game Changer Award honours bold thinking, innovation, and leadership that challenges norms and leaves the industry permanently changed. Barry Robinson, President and Managing Director, International Operations, for Travel + Leisure Co., meets that definition.
Barry has spent more than two decades transforming vacation ownership outside of North America. Traditionally, the industry had been strong in coastal holiday markets, but one of Barry’s first game-changing moves was forging partnerships with developers to bring it into urban destinations. It repositioned the product as a lifestyle asset that could be used for short city breaks, events, and business travel, resetting expectations of how vacation ownership could be used.
He also pioneered mixed-use developments, seamlessly integrating vacation ownership inventory with traditional hotel operations. Hotel guests transition into vacation ownership prospects, while higher occupancy rates from club members drive onsite food, beverage and retail revenues. This symbiotic relationship translates into stronger financial performance for developers and a more sustainable, diversified revenue base.
Barry has spearheaded the creation of a developer benefits program called Lifestyle, designed to extend the utility of vacation ownership beyond accommodation and to everyday life. This platform offers all members – on a complimentary basis – exclusive deals and discounts with brands they know and trust, to enrich their travels or their everyday lives. It also offers benefit tiers that enable members to get more from vacation ownership – for example, by exchanging points for vacation exchange resorts, hotel rewards points (utilising the portfolios of giants like Accor and Wyndham), cruises and bespoke travel packages, while benefitting from complimentary housekeeping and apartment upgrades. In 2025, this program was expanded to the four clubs developed by Barry’s organisation, and it is strengthening retention, increasing engagement, and encouraging repeat purchases.
Equally transformative is the recent introduction of the Guest Resort Host role, a hybrid position blending hotel service and marketing. Guests experience a streamlined journey guided by a single host – instead of multiple people – which enhances the experience and improves presentation attendance. Last year, attendance rose 12% and finished 7% ahead of budget. The program has been rolled out across the business, reducing operational friction, elevating guest satisfaction, and improving sales flow.
Barry has challenged an entrenched vacation ownership convention: indefinite ownership. His development of the first 20-year vacation club addressed a critical consumer pain point that others had just accepted. By committing to giving members proceeds from property sales at the end of the club term, and offering the revolutionary option to forgo levies by surrendering annual points, he overturned the customer hesitations limiting industry growth. This rewriting of industry ‘rules’ has helped Travel + Leisure Co. unlock new market segments and reach a younger demographic.
Barry’s impact is most visible in the extraordinary expansion of Travel + Leisure Co.’s international footprint. Under his leadership, the business has grown across Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Europe, with new ambitions extending to the Middle East. Today, the business has approximately 6,000 associates and manages a club portfolio valued at over US$1 billion.
One of Barry’s boldest moves was acquiring Accor Vacation Club in 2024, a move which increased the Travel + Leisure Co. Asia Pacific membership base beyond 100,000 and increased the resort portfolio by 40%. Accor Vacation Club had not been selling ownerships for years, so Barry and his team rebuilt the sales function into an operation that now generates over US$2 million monthly.
2025 was a landmark year for Club Wyndham South Pacific, with 13 additional properties added in a single year. This level of portfolio growth demonstrates not just ambition, but operational capability. Post-stay satisfaction scores have now also hit 9.2, an extraordinary achievement in a sector often scrutinised for service delivery.
Behind these numbers is a leader committed to people. Barry has consistently invested in associate wellbeing, offering industry-leading benefits, career pathways, and development opportunities. Many leaders within the organisation have risen through the ranks under his mentorship, including 159 who were promoted last year.
Beyond corporate success, Barry’s commitment to social impact reflects the broader responsibility of leadership. Through an annual surf challenge event, the business has raised approximately US$200,000 for the Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) Global Research Foundation. His advocacy demonstrates that influence extends beyond commercial gain.
Perhaps most importantly, Barry has always been an architect of industry dialogue and governance. As President of the Asia Pacific Resort Development Organisation and Deputy President of the Australian Timeshare and Holiday Ownership Council, he has shaped regulatory and strategic conversations across the region.
Barry has repeatedly questioned convention, imagined new models, and executed bold strategy at scale. His initiatives have redefined what vacation ownership is internationally, making him a true Game Changer. In an industry often constrained by tradition and convention, Barry stands as a transformative force who has fundamentally rewritten what vacation ownership is.
