Karma Group’s flagship resort on the Island of Bali boasts some of the most opulent and genre-defining design in the southeast Asian region. The work of leading architects and interior designers from Europe, Asia and Australia, Karma Kandara has continually evolved since its inception, bringing online new accommodations and facilities and reimagining existing ones.
The Resort’s setting atop a spectacular limestone cliff overlooking the sparkling Indian Ocean demands an outstanding design approach and the 76 private pool villas achieve this, blending traditional Balinese architecture with contemporary artworks from Indonesia and the region, with luxury amenities and exquisite views of tropical green and ocean vistas.
The resort’s destination restaurant di Mare boasts a unique semi al-fresco setting on a crag, seemingly suspended over the ocean – its Mediterranean meets tropical decor making a perfect design match, while the legendary Karma Beach Bali, accessed by private Cliff Inclinator welcomes guests to a world of castaway luxury featuring a stunning thatched pergola where food and drinks are served, as well as day beds and pavilions strewn across the beach.
Karma Spa centres on a trio of luxury spa shacks suspended at the edge of a vertiginous cliff, 85 meters above the Indian Ocean. A glass walled infrared sauna is the perfect detoxifier, especially when followed by a soak in the cliff hanging Himalayan salt bath.
Karma Kandara’s latest residences have been designed by famed Australian architects Woods Bagot, who seamlessly blend vernacular architectural elements with a clean contemporary aesthetic with a modern tropical look for the interiors, which blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Interior design is by celebrated German designer Tina Kirschner, who has used organic palettes including muted blues and greens to create opulent yet welcoming spaces that echo the local environment. Her décor evokes a relaxed and uncluttered Mediterranean atmosphere, with richly upholstered furnishings in earthy shades accented with artworks from around the Indonesia archipelago.
Comfort is paramount when it comes to the residences – think comfy low-slung couches and custom fittings mixed with traditional accents garnered from around the Indonesian archipelago. Bedrooms feature king and queen size beds made up with luxuriant high thread count sheets and duvets, kitchens are equipped with high calibre German appliances and the latest audiovisual systems can be found in the open plan living area and bedrooms.
The villas also make the most of the tropical environment and jaw-dropping views with floor to ceiling glass and open-plan kitchen dining space that give directly onto the private pool.
All in all, Karma Kandara represents the pinnacle of high end modern tropical design – respectful of its local environment, committed to comfort and relaxation yet pushing the envelope in terms of design and artistry.
